Case - 1 Avian Influenza

1.A 65 year old male presents to the Emergency Department in winter with a one day history of fever, malaise, cough, and body aches. Seasonal influenza is prevalent in the community. The patient has a history of ischemic coronary artery disease and is status post cardiac bypass surgery two months prior. He has not received an influenza vaccine this year. The patient is a city dweller without a history of exposure to birds or farm animals. Recent travel history is negative, as might be expected with his recent health problems.
